Newsletter: What Funders Look for in a Budget

When applying for grants, it's crucial to ensure that your budget aligns with the well-crafted plan presented in your proposal. Funders scrutinize budgets to see if the financial details support your vision and make sense. Here's what funders are typically looking for:

  1. Realism: Funders want to be confident that your financial projections are achievable. This means demonstrating that you can realistically raise and allocate the funds as outlined in your plan. Overly ambitious or vague financial statements can raise red flags about your ability to manage the project.
  2. Financial Health: Demonstrating your organization’s financial stability is essential. Funders need to trust that their investment will be managed by a financially sound entity. Your budget will show this by being balanced, or even better, by showing a modest surplus.
  3. Support from Other Funders: Funders often look to see who else is investing in your project. This can be tricky, as some funders prefer to be the primary sponsor to gain visibility, while others prefer to be just one piece of the financial puzzle. Although funders’ preferences vary, they usually want a clear understanding of your revenue plan and who else is on board. Understanding your funder's motivation is key.

Presenting a clear, realistic, and well-supported budget is key to gaining the confidence of funders—and therefore raising more money. And that's what we're all here for!

Ensure your budget translates your narrative into believable numbers, showcases financial health, and transparently outlines other funding sources. This approach will make your proposal more compelling and increase the likelihood of securing the funds to turn your vision into reality.

Nonprofit Grant Magic

Hi, I’m Tracy! I’m an entrepreneur and grantwriter who teaches nonprofit professionals and aspiring grantwriters to gain the skills and knowledge to feel confident writing grant proposals or launching a brand new career as a grantwriter. I’m a nonprofit communicator, fundraiser, and small business owner. When I’m not hanging out with my family and my Bernedoodle, I’m gardening, watering my 40+ plants, playing pickleball, or making a home-cooked dinner. But my first passion is to raise money for the nonprofits that I work for and care so much about. And after 20 years of grantwriting, I’m now dedicated to teaching more people to write grants because the demand for our work is greater than ever—and really important organizations need us.

While we still don't know how this will play out, with challenges proceeding through the court system, we do know one thing. Federal...
