I’m frequently asked about grantwriting, and one thing that stands out is how many people doubt their qualifications to write grant proposals. I want to set the record straight: YOU ARE QUALIFIED! You can start writing grant proposals right now or whenever you feel ready. To help you get started, here are the top five questions I get asked most often:

1️⃣ Do I need a certification to be a grantwriter?
No, you don’t need any certification to write grant proposals. While training is definitely beneficial (and we offer excellent training options!), a formal certificate is not required.

2️⃣ Do I need a specialized or advanced degree to be a grantwriter?
Not at all. Grantwriters come from various educational backgrounds and fields of experience. What matters most is your ability to convey your organization’s impacts and needs effectively.

3️⃣ How many grant proposals can I submit?
There’s no limit to the number of proposals you can submit. Aim to request what you need and what aligns with your project’s budget. The goal is to ensure your organization’s work is fully funded.

4️⃣ How do I search for grants?
Finding grant opportunities is much like conducting research. The process varies depending on your location and field. Start with this free resource and consider our mini-course, Find Your Funders, if you need help with your research.

5️⃣ What should I write in a grant proposal?
Follow the funder’s instructions, which typically include answering specific questions through an online portal. For a sample format, search “your state name + common grant form” or check out Minnesota’s revised form here.

Nonprofit Grant Magic

Hi, I’m Tracy! I’m an entrepreneur and grantwriter who teaches nonprofit professionals and aspiring grantwriters to gain the skills and knowledge to feel confident writing grant proposals or launching a brand new career as a grantwriter. I’m a nonprofit communicator, fundraiser, and small business owner. When I’m not hanging out with my family and my Bernedoodle, I’m gardening, watering my 40+ plants, playing pickleball, or making a home-cooked dinner. But my first passion is to raise money for the nonprofits that I work for and care so much about. And after 20 years of grantwriting, I’m now dedicated to teaching more people to write grants because the demand for our work is greater than ever—and really important organizations need us.

Tracy Babler & Associates @nonprofitgrantmagic Hi Reader, If your organization has relied heavily on federal grants, you’ve probably noticed how unpredictable they’ve become over the past few weeks. Grants and contracts have been frozen, unfrozen, and refrozen, throwing many recipients into a terrified frenzy about what will happen if their funding goes away. While we still don't know how this will play out, with challenges proceeding through the court system, we do know one thing. Federal...

I transitioned from being primarily a grantwriter to focusing on training the next generation of grantwriters. This decision didn’t come lightly (and has made me busier than ever!),...
